2011 Minnesota Governers Opener

Wells Fargo on board for Governor’s Fishing Opener


Wells Fargo has donated $10,000 to the upcoming Governor's Fishing Opener. The bank is also donating $2,000 in product. "We are happy to support this event and help bring it to our community," said Eric Barth, Wells Fargo business relations manager. "This will be great promotion for the city of Grand Rapids and the surrounding communities." The 2011 opener is the 63rd governor's opener since it was established in 1948 and the third time Grand Rapids has hosted the event. The truth about vacations in MN during the winter

The winter is a great time to take the family on a getaway to Minnesota. Here on the resort we offer ice houses free with each cabin rental. There is also a sledding hill on the resort for your kids to enjoy. The idea of sitting around a nice fire enjoying the stories of along ago. The ice fishing is always great for someone who has never been fishing before since you can sit and watch the fish thru the hole in the ice. Everybody seems to enjoy this at least for a while. Winter Activites

The activities in the winter do change quite a bit in the winter. You do have to like the outdoors more in the winter and be capable of standing the cold elements. The biggest thing we do in the winter is ice fish here on Blackduck lake which is the 2nd busiest lake in the winter in Beltrami county. We have solid wood ice houses so we do get spoiled when it comes to staying warm, since they do keep you warmer then portables. We do a lot of sledding on our resort hill as well. The hill we have is not really big, but it does just fine for someone like me who likes going down but not walking back up. There is a tubing and ski area close to our resort and we usually go there a few times a year which is fun.

The ice skating here is a fun activity as well but i do not do this, this is for the younger kids since the ice really hurts when you fall. I do like to go on hikes in the snow since the snow really makes the woods so quite. Sometimes you do need snowshoes but usually i will go on a trail that is traveled somewhat so it is easier.

Bird feeders that are cheap

The boys and i built a couple bird feeders this past weekend and boy have they been busy. Just a couple minutes ago a bird flew into out window to escape a hawk that was on his tail. The birds have now disappeared from the feeder for now. These bird feeders do bring a lot of entertainment for us in the winter when things are cold and snowy.
We built the feeders out of PVC pipe and I can say they where some of the easiest to build and are suppose to be squirrel proof. I got the plans online and did have detailed instructions.

Ice fishing time

Now is the time to go ice fishing, if the lake will  get making ice. it is only about 2 1/2'' thick under the 3-4" of frozen snow. I do not like going out until the real ice is 5-6" so it has some growing to do. I think that when people count the melted snow on top as ice they are taking a chance since it is not strong and is just added weight to the good ice.  I look for the ice to be good in a week or so and will just have to keep the ice skating rink by shore smooth for the boys while waiting for the ice to get thick.

Cheap Minnesota vacations

The Minnesota resort vacation is still one of the cheapest  for a family. The whole week for a family of 4 can cost $35 a night. All you need to bring from home is food, towels and soaps. The resort activities are included free when you rent a cabin. With all of the activities there is something for the entire family to keep entertained. As resort owners we take pride in keeping everyone happy while staying at our resort. Vacations with the family can help relieve a lot of stress of daily life and bring the family closer when they are forced to vacation as a group. Now we are not a Disney land but we bring nature back into a lot of families lives and our costs are tremendously cheaper.

What to do on a winter day.

I had a slow day today since there is no ice fishing yet. The lake is not freezing at the shore because it is insulated with some snow and only about 2-3" of ice so far under what i call fake ice. There are a lot of people that say the ice 6 inches thick but when it comes to my inspection of the ice i do not call freezing slush and snow for this total. There has already been some people go thru since they think it is thick enough. I think the lake out in the middle will be good since it did not get any snow on it.
 So today we made a couple bird feeders out of a pvc pipe. I google it and it looks like it will work as far as keeping the squirrels out but here in Northern MN the little critters are a little extra hungry so they seem to work harder to get food. Time will tell if it works. We did try and flood the lake right at shore so the boys can go ice skating but i think we need to do some more tomorrow.

How to choose the right resort.

How to choose a resort for your vacation can be tricky sometimes without going to the resort in person. Our resort web site provides lots of information and pictures which is a great start. The only bad thing about web sites is the pictures can be very deceiving if they are not up to date. I try to up date my pictures on the site on a regular bases because we want to leave nothing hidden.
  The next thing to decide is what is important while staying at the resort. Do you need a lot of activities for kids, is the lake a boating lake or fishing lake, close to town, beach, protected dock, boat rental and on and on.
We try an provide our guests with all of the things most resorts have and more. The only thing we really do not provide is a restaurant and bar. Since we are so close to the town of Blackduck which has restuarants we believe we can make everyone happy here.

Minnesota snowmobing trails

The snow is falling right now with about 5-6" on the ground. I is the start of winter for snowmobiling. The lake did freeze last night but with all of the snow coming down today that will slow the process somewhat. When ever the snow gets on the ice before it gets to thick it insulates the ice so it slows the process down some. It is a good start for the snowmobile trails around northern Minnesota. Ice fishing for 2010???

Blackduck Lake does have a great number of of nice size perch. The last couple years has been slow but this year i got a feeling it will be a hot bite. The lake is just getting ice right now so it will be about a week or so before i can get the ice house out there. The first month is some great fishing since the fish have really been taking a break for the last couple months. All species will come into the shallows for the first 2 weeks from the walleye, northern and perch. The lake has ice in the bay since last night so tonight i would think the whole lake will have a nice sheet covering it. Usually i am ice fishing on turkey day bet this year it might a little longer since the nice warm weather stuck around longer the normal. i would guess the fishing will be good since the fall was slow this year.

Winter  is knocking on our door this evening. It sure looks like Blackduck Lake will have a chance to freeze over if the wind dies down. There is some talk of snow but not much as of yet. Basic walleye fishing

Have you been wanting to try your luck on catching some nice walleye? Well Blackduck Lake is a perfect lake to learn these skills. The reason this lake is a easy fish is because the depth of the lake which in the deepest it is 28'. There is so many different places to fish on the lake of 2600 acres. The best time to try is from opener to about the 3rd week of June. You will be doing a lot of trolling during this time and maybe some jigging. The bait during this time of the year is usually minnows but sometimes the water is warm enough to try leechs. If you stay at our resort i will teach you all what i can while you are here. Winter Activities in Minnesota

With winter slowly coming into our view, we had some snow finally. I watched the boys today go snowboarding on our resort hill for the first time of the year. There is not much snow(1" or so) but it is enough to start the winter process. Ice Fishing Safety

To check the thickness i always do it myself and do not rely on here say. I do start where it is shallow and keep going until it starts getting to thin. I will not go out very deep which means over my head until it gets 5" or over. You can walk safely on good 4" ice a that is a rule of thumb.


If you can goo ice fishing when it is just forming this is the best time since all of the fish go like gang busters for a couple weeks. Thanksgiving Weekend Vacations in Minnesota

Minnesota Deer Opener

Deer opener for 2010 opens in about 10 hours, so make sure you have your blaze orange handy. It looks like a good opener if it does not get to warm. The deer are moving a little bit but they do have a lot to eat since the weather has been so warm. There has been some change on one of the zones #169 has turned into a a lottery which is a big change for a long time. We have 5 cabins rented out to hunters for the weekend then it is time to blow them out and wait until the ice comes on the lake.

Turkey Day and Ice Fishing

Will there be ice on the lake to go ice fishing??? There usually is enough to go out on the ice closer to shore , but this is some of the best fishing of the whole year. The walleye, perch and northern come into the shallows when first ice forms and feed like crazy for about a week or so. then They go to the deeper water and get into their regular pattern for the winter. Early Ice Fishing in MN

Any bets on early ice this year?? Usually i am ice fishing by Thanksgiving but there has not been a really hard freeze as of yet. The grass is still growing and it does not look like really cold weather in the future. The early ice fishing is some of the best since the fish are coming into the shallow water and going after anything that moves. If you can plan a last minute vacation i would suggest to keep a eye on the ice an try an get the first fish out of the lake.

Minnesota Fall Colors

The colors are peaking for the fall change of season. I look for the leaves to really to fall in the next week with the warm and dry forcast. This is the time to take a drive thru the Chippewa National Forest or the Blackduck State Forest for some awsome scenic trips. Fall colors are peaking

Here in northern MN the leaves are right a peak and will be there for another week or so. This is the time to take a scenic drive thru the northwoods to view the change of seasons. The back roads around Gilstead and Webster lakes is a great place to drive. Another trip to take is one farther north which takes you up by Red Lake and that area. Minnesota fall color report

The Virginia creeper is full of bright red leaves, and asters and goldenrods are at full bloom in the open areas. The tamaracks in some parts of the bog have turned golden. The cattails and grasses are nearing peak shades of gold and rust. The park trails are best to observe the many signs of fall. Fall color at Lake Bemidji State Park is expected to reach peak in the next 10-12 days.

The air is starting to get cooler in the evening with the temp down to the 30's so the feel of deer season is starting to be felt. Paradise in Minnesota

Our resort is on Blackduck lake which is rated as one of the top walleye lakes in the whole state for its size. If you look at the surveys done by the DNR you will see how many walleye are in each net compared to other lakes. We had a 13 fish count in 2006 which is really good since a lot of lakes this size only have 3 or 4. In the larger lakes like Leech and Cass you will find the count around ours but the lake is 10 times the size.

Fishing in Minnesota

Well the wind is blowing on the lakes in Northern Minnesota this week. Here on Blackduck there are white caps but one thing about this lake you still can get out since there is a big island in the middle. You have to get to the side where the wind is not to wicked.
There are also smaller lakes within 1/2 hour of White Birch Resort you can jump to if it is to windy even on Blackduck which are a lot smaller and protected by the wind by trees. At these lakes you will be able to catch some smaller panfish but it is something to do for a day.

Walleye fishing in Minnesota

The walleye are still slow to bite but with the temp down to 45* last night they will start to get a little more aggressive to find food. In another couple weeks they will be starting to school up and be easier to catch. Nudist Beach in MN

Wonder how many people will click to read this since the heading has a nudist beach in the headline. No we do not have a nudist beach since we are a family resort. We do have a nice beach with no drop offs what so ever and also a heated 82* heated pool. The fishing has been great this past few days except yeasterday it was to windy. Minnesota Walleye

We received 1" of rain last night so everyone is slow of getting up and active. There where no fishing reports from last night due to the rain. We did have some guests go to the Tamarac river up by Upper Red Lakle and try some shore fishing, since they where up scouting yesterday. There was a guy pulling 20" wallleye out one after another, so they wanted to try it even if the fish are in the slot limit.

Sand castle building contest

We had a sand building contest here at White Birch Resort on Blackduck Lake. It was the girls against the boys, with 4 on each side. The boys started out with some "who is in charge?"  Finally after watching the girls, the boys decided they had better work together and did a great job. The boys did a medival design and had a live frog as well. The girls where the winners with a main castle and then some flower gardens, trees, shells and a river with a water fall. The 1st place prize was Papa Murphys pizza with everyone getting blizzards.

To make a day fishing in the rain you do need to invest in some good rain gear  and also gloves to keep you dry. Another thing to remember is to bring some rain proof shoes since the rain will be running down yopur suit and getting to your feet. Catch a 100 walleye ???

Is this next spring going to be like last year when we caught 100 fish a night starting on Memorial Day for about 3 weeks. I think it might be a little earlier this year since the ice on the lake has crystalized all the way thru yesterday with the wind. This morning it did get to 16* over night so things did freeze hard again but the lake will still be thawing from the bottom from here on out. It is not that thick like other years so i am betting the ice will be gone by easter.
